What NOT to Buy: J. Crew Woven-Front Cardigan

Hi Everyone!

I tried the J. Crew Woven-Front Cardigan a few weeks ago because I loved the way that it was styled on a mannequin.  The love ends with the styling.  This sweater made me look like I was impersonating a grandpa on Halloween, or like the black female Mr. Rogers preparing to ask, "won't you be my neighbor?":

It's bad.  But don't take my word for it, here is an IRL picture of the sweater:

 Just say no.

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. Yes I can see your point...the pattern lends itself to being "Grandpa-like"....but if I may be so bold...maybe the heavy denim underneath isn't the best choice? It might look better and fresher with something slightly more delicate? I have my eye on the deep ember color but am waiting for a sale!
    Cheers, Lisa

    1. Hi Lisa! I totally see your point that the chambray shirt may be the problem. But, as you said, the pattern is grandpa-like. It doesn't look that way when it's styled under blazer, but I wasn't a fan of how it looked on.

I really appreciate your feedback! Happy Friday-eve!

  2. Maybe it's just not your taste, but I think it looks pretty good on you. It's definitely very menswear-ish. The model shot shows it with a gray linen tee with a black dog on it, which maybe lightens it up a bit. It's a serious sweater that needs something to balance that out. I like this What NOT to Buy series, keep it coming! :)

  3. Well, Mrs. Rogers, I don't think it matters what's underneath that sweater. You look like the cohost of the infamous TV program! Now, you just need to get the right pair of slippers and you'll be all set! I have a "menswear" sweater that I am returning today. I really wish they would go back to more feminine clothes. Thanks for all your reviews. I find them very helpful.

    1. I agree, all of the strong masculine cuts and looks are getting a bit old. Each time new looks roll out, there are only a few things that have some feminine flair to them!

  4. Ha! Great post. This is one of the few things that recently caught my eye on a mannequin. I agree that something more feminine would look better under it. But even with your new style, it doesn't seem "you." Thanks for the review because I forgot to look for/try it on yesterday.

  5. Lol, I kind of like it! But then again I love the menswear, grampa look:0) I have a sweater from around 2010 from them that my kids called the gram pa sweater, I wish they'd bring that one back it was the color block cardigan. I wwant this one but, Ill wait for a sale and promo and try it with a lace tee underneath and loafers. You look good in anything you put on!

  6. Oh, I don't think it's that bad! You look nowhere NEAR like Mr. Rogers. Maybe it's because I like the sweater on you (I haven't seen it in-store yet), but I think it could be really cute with the top 3 buttons done and sleeves pushed up, a tee underneath, and very fitted (to balance the boxy, oversized cut of the sweater) white jeans.
